National average stalls, remains stable

GasBuddy Blog -- American motorists delight- is this the year we break tradition? Six out of the last seven years we've seen the national average increase an average of ten cents per gallon between Christmas and January 15, but so far this year, we've seen virtually no change in the national average.

According to GasBuddy data, the national average currently stands at $3.264, rising a mere 3 cents since bottoming out before Christmas. The question then becomes, will we officially buck that trend for 2013? It appears possible. However, it also appears that gasoline prices are rising today in the Great Lakes, and that may push the national average higher, but still, the fact remains is that gasoline prices remain subdued entering 2013.

Maybe the average is the same, but it sure seems like they are more volatile... Higher swings in pricing for little if any reason.

Stable? Are you joking?

Prices here were below $3 at several stations at the Christmas season. Then they jumped 12 cents. Then another increase and another jump to today's $3.27 at many stations and $3.29 at many others. A few have done their usual drop by a penny every two or three days.

The Atlanta average is $3.318 now after $3.240 one week ago and $3.227 one month ago, misleading numbers / comparisons.

I am not sure why anyone with one ounce of sense would buy gas from a station that is selling it at $3.29 (or higher) when other nearby stations have lowered prices to $3.24.

I wonder what would happen if the government broke up the monopoly in the petroleum industry, like they did the telephone industry (ATT) quite a few years ago... THEN there could be some competition and prices could drop like a rock!!

Yesterdays post was they were telling us to prepare for gas prices between $4.00 and $5.00 so this is the quiet before the storm.
