Arizona sues U.S. EPA over coal power plant emissions

Reuters -- Arizona challenged in federal court U.S. environmental regulators efforts to force Arizona power companies to spend up to $1 billion to install pollution control equipment at three coal plants to reduce haze in the region's national parks.

Arizona's Attorney General Tom Horne said in a statement last week the emission control measures proposed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) would not affect health or be reduce emissions visible to the human eye.

"This is an absurd action that would significantly raise utility rates for most Arizonans without providing any benefit to anyone," Horne said in a statement.

Officials at the EPA were not immediately available for comment.

On behalf of the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, which filed a plan to reduce emissions

Why is Arizona burning dirty coal contaminated with many different elements and compounds that are very harmful to life and the environment, use other sources of fuel that are much much cleaner to burn! There is NO Clean Coal! Would you breathe the smoke from these coal burning monsters? If not, why would you allow this smoke to settle or drift through areas of the US that are some of the last natural and pristine areas of the US? Wake up people and smell the smoke! Drive vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

Grim that air pollution is an issue there (I've seen it at the Grand Canyon); and grim that state officials would rather start a fight they likely can't win with EPA over a visible problem. Coal is a filthy way to generate power, environmentally speaking - to say nothing of the atrocious environmental practices of the coal mining industry. If it's not cost effective to clean up the old power plants, they should make way for cleaner natural gas or other choices - and that's the real reason the coal plants aren't economically viable, with natural gas abundant and cheap, they can't compete.

I once lived there for five months at the end of fall and the beginning of winter. During the blizzard of 2008 / 2009, I noticed the snow had a brownish / yellow color to it, as it stuck to the sides of trees and telephone poles. I also went to visit the city's of Aurora, Golden, Denver and the Redrocks Park and Music Ampitheater in Morrison Colorado. I seen for myself the smog and pollution problems Denver has and it's awful. So if the EPA cares about the environment like they should, then they should do something for it.
