Could severance tax slow oil and gas boom?

Times Reporter -- The president of the Ohio Oil and Gas Association believes the state should do all it can to encourage development of the Utica shale play — not discourage it by increasing the severance tax on oil and gas production.

“If you want less of something, tax it,” said Jerry James, a Zanesville native who owns the Artex Oil Co. of Marietta. The company is one of the largest Ohio-based producers of oil and gas in the state.

He presented the industry’s case against a proposal by Gov. John Kasich to increase the severance tax to 4% to pay for a cut in the state’s income tax.

A severance tax is one that is imposed on the removal of nonrenewable resources, such as crude oil, condensate and natural gas, coalbed methane and carbon dioxide.

“The severance tax is an archaic tax,” said James, noting t

Sure they won't take the gas if there is a 4% tax. Can't make any $$$$ that way.

If there is a way to tax a business, the government will find a way. Now is not the time for more taxes, 'Coming out of the closet' Chuck's economy is not improving but continues to hurt the population and the job numbers continue to be down – no matter how smoooooth talking Chuck spins those numbers and he can spin them very well! People will still drive and buy fuel no matter what but it sure helps to have a job too! NO NEW TAXES! Consumers will pay for any additional taxes imposed by the government.
The only thing you can always be sure of is: Death and Taxes! Can it be Death before Taxes?
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

Lower taxes allows consumers to have more money. More money leads many to spend some of that extra money. More money flowing into the economy (from consumers) leads to more demand for production and or services. More production or services leads to more jobs. Our current "Let's-raise-taxes"-politicians continue to believe that solving each problem means throwing money at it. Thomas Jefferson was wise enough to WARN that "A government can not give you anything that it did not take from someone first." Raising taxes STRIPS people of their FREEDOM and is contrary to property rights, property ownership, and the pursuit of happiness. For everyone who wants to support socialism, move to a country that already has socialism and stop messing with America!

We are America and WE approve this message.

If the benefit of the increase is not for raises, or other purely gov't use, do it. Spend the money for the citizenry.

The government will tax it out of existence or bring in the EPA to regulate it out of existence. Obozo will do whatever it takes to stop oil production. HE DOES NOT WANT US TO DRIVE CARS.

Modest severance tax increases probably wouldn't slow the boom; overly greedy politicians would, however.

In oil company owner saying that taxing oil isn't good. Imagine that!
