But, but, but... diesel is supposed to be "green" - all the stations list their price in "green"

Diesel was a lot more polluting decades ago before it was cleaned up. Unsurprising that it's still more polluting then gasoline.

WHY do people in Oregon always look down their noses at California residents?
At least California isn't China where fresh air is being sold to the gullible in soda cans because of the polluted air.
In the '70s the diesel exhaust contained a lot of particulates. Those are gone, but the other gases are not.
Speaking of smelly exhaust when driving behind diesel buses and trucks, just drive behind an older car or truck and smell that oil burner with incomplete combustion of the gasoline. What a stink. I recently was following a guy in an older car that smelled of raw gasoline. I wonder if that car has caught fire yet.

Diesel fumes more polluting than gas? LA Times? They live in that depression the wind does not clear out very well, a major lack of fresh air for them and exhaust gases collect much easier there! Many gasous and combustion vapors are polluting: gasoline, diesel, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrous oxides, volcano off gassing and my uncle clem's nasty butt farts! Europe has many diesel vehicles and they don't seem to have a problem with diesel exhaust pollution. If you ever follow behind a bus or a large diesel truck, you will smell the exhaust very clearly. In the 70's and 80's, vehicle exhaust was really bad, with clouds of smoke puffing out the back too! Vehicles today are much cleaner burning with a much cleaner exhaust. Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, vehicle manufactures Produce and the population ‘Drives’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! XII/XXII/MMXII! - The Day After......

Once again some people will never change old school thinking is why we are falling behind the rest of the world. I'll keep my CLEAN DIESEL until it dies then I'll buy two more. It does not smell, its not slow and I get over 40 mpg. Win win.. west coast study?? what did they use trucks from the 70's which aren't on the roads in a great amount. You get more work out of a diesel thats why trains, buses, trucks, and back up power plants use it.

Yes, the war on Diesel must rage on.
We can't have a much more efficient fuel out there that people can make in their garage. Gotta keep the slaves attached to the fuel pump that we control.

Ya think? I hope that no animals were harmed during this study... especially the deep-thinking researchers who have obviously had their heads up someone's tailpipe too long. Next study: "Carbon Monoxide More Hazardous Than Originally Thought".

Perhaps California would do better to crack down on out-of-state and Mexican registered cars instead of picking on diesel. Those of us who register our cars in this state must pass smog inspections every two years and pay outrageous fees while those who live in this state with Mexican and out-of-state plates get away without doing so. Even military drivers who are residents from other states are already forced to get smog checks. The state needs to crack down on these other freeloaders.
