Energy Department proposes first new nuclear waste site by 2021. I thought Yucca Mountain was the ultimate nuclear respository, now they want another location? In certain cases nuclear waste will be generated but limit the generation of nuclear waste so waste storage sites can be kept to a minimum. And don't take so long for a permanent waste site selection. Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, vehicle manufactures Produce and the population ‘Drives’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! XII/XXII/MMXII! - The Day After......

All sites seem to temporary. They never get to the permanent one.

@WeasleyOC, your comments might have more weight if you bothered to use the spell checker.
Perhaps something you need to "evolve" towards.

Great idea, @wayoung56, but isn't that how Godzilla was created?
In all seriousness, decades of burning coal have dispersed tons of mercury into the air, only to have it settle into our very sizable oceans. Result? We have to watch how much fish we eat because of the mercury in their bodies.
So, maybe the oceans don't do as great a job at dispersal as you might think.

Nuclear waste has the potential to be the worst environmental diaaster known to man. It has the potential to wipe out all future generations of our families on earth. There presently is not a safe method of either destroying or storing nuclear waste and many scientists say that there never will be as it takes thousands of years to breakdown!

The community that gets it will get far more money than a fly ash disposal site and be more safe to boot.

I want to know which state will say, "Okay, build a nuclear waste dump in our state."
Outside of Las Vegas, Nevada is already one of the most sparsely populated regions in our country and they said no to building one at Yucca Mountain.
Who else wants to step up?

A permanent repository by 2048???? Typical that the government plans to take 35 years to accomplish something. Assuming that they actually meet this timetable which is unlikely. The only thing this administration seems good for is wasting taxpayers money.

"All of the sites would be chosen with the consent of the host communities."
That pretty much dooms the whole project thanks to NIMBY and the Tree Huggers.

Sink it in a mid-ocean trench where dilution will negate the effects of any leakage. They had to refine the stuff from existing materials to begin with, nothing new has been created, dilute it and put it back in environment...
