Firm pulls red-light cameras from San Bernardino after payments stop

The Sun -- SAN BERNARDINO - The city's red-light cameras have gone black, one more effect of the city's bankruptcy.

City officials say they couldn't afford to keep making payments to Scottsdale, Ariz.-based American Traffic Solutions without even steeper cutbacks than the ones already made in what they call a bare-bones budget passed as the city works through bankruptcy court.

And so the company pulled out the cameras, which photographed vehicles at major intersections and mailed tickets to anyone running a red light.

That's just fine with some City Council members.

I heard the other day that about 90% of drivers pay the fines unquestioned and of the remaining, about 70% actually don't have to pay. Well worth trying not to pay.

And it's probably good that some are being pulled.

Good those cameras are scams anyway they produce many more negative effects than they do positive so whatever they were shut off is good.

Great. All cityes should learn that punishing drivers is not the solution to fix the economy.

Seems like most cities get rid of them after only a few years. Maybe other cities will get the hints and quit installing them altogether.

Sounds like some shady dealings are going on....

On the flip side, many people will be happy the red-light cameras are no longer functional there.
Those cameras were the subject of much debate.

I would have guessed the fine payments would pay for the cameras. But alas I am guessing they do not budget the money that way. So now they also do not get the fine money and loose more for the city budget.
