Does Europe know something we don't, or is it that the big 3 don't what us to know???

As it takes years for new technologies to work the bugs out. The US needs to be going in the direction of alternative fuels for our vehicles. History will repeat itself otherwise.

"Hybrids and electric cars are a long way from being practical."
That, of course, isn't true. My 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid is very practical, can do anything an ICE car can do, and still gets 40mpg average in all kinds of driving. I think that most people don't really look at the numbers, they just make rash statements.
My break even point will be 3 to 5 years depending on how many miles I put on each year and I plan to keep the car 15 years (if I last that long). So people can make all the wild statements they want, but that doesn't make them true.

From the article: "In Europe, roughly half of all new passenger cars are sold with diesel engines--but it's the only major market in the world where that's the case."
============================================================
Latin America might not be considered a "major market", but Brasil (I heard) subsidizes diesel fuel, hence much more diesel vehicles there. Also I sold a diesel truck to a dealer a while back which was slated for shipment to Central America.

Gas engines are going to stay around for a very long time. Hybrids and electric cars are a long way from being practical.

The initial costs of hybrids and EVs are still too high. Payout takes too long. On top of that EVs have a range problem as well as a problem with the availability of charging infrastructure. With the continued improvement of the gas engines, it will be the engine of choice for a very long time.

Not hybrids, and especially not EVs can cut the mustard. What we need is a truly better alternative, not just something pushed on the public through mass indoctrination and scare tactics.

The market share of future vehicles is heavily dependent on the price of fuel. Oil is going up, and it seems natural gas (and hydrogen since most hydrogen is obtained from natural gas at the moment) will soon go up as well.

Lets see. Chevy Volt driving range = 30 miles. Recharge needs 2-6 hours IF you can find it. Tesla driving range = 220 miles. Recharge 6-8 hours IF you can find it.
Gasoline automobile driving range 150-500. "Recharge" at the pump needs 5 minutes. Ten if you have to leak and get coffee. Locations everywhere.

The good news is that gasoline-powered cars will be getting much better mileage in 5-10 years.
Natural gas is still my preference, but we have to work out the safety and equipment cost issues.

Of course, the gas engine cars thrive because they cost less then the hybrid and electric car. When the price for the hybrid and electric car decreases more, then more people will buy them.

Gasoline will still be used as long as it is relatively inexpensive or the govt. interferes in our ability to choose it.

Most of us are driving 10 year old cars - or older. Besides, has anyone noticed the number of renters compared to homeowners these days?
Anyone found a landlord willing to install the electrical equipment required for your EV?
No plug-in, no EV.
