Gas prices drive interest in CNG

The Spectrum -- Business professor Dan Allen commutes from his Washington City home to his job at Utah State University-College of Eastern Utah in Price each week.

It means he is particularly sensitive to the price of gasoline advertised at stations along the nearly 600-mile round trip.

That’s why he did a double-take a few years ago as he drove past an alternative fuel station in his gas-guzzling, V8-powered pickup.

“About four years ago, I just kept driving past this gas station in Price. The sign said fuel was 67 cents a gallon,” Allen said. “It was just incomprehensible to me that something could be that cheap.”

As more and more vehicles, trucks or buses are built to use natural gas OR converted over to natural gas, more natural gas will be used and the price will go up, just like the morning sun. Don't expect natural gas to stay low for very long, the trend for all fuel prices is always up and up more! It does Not matter if you have to heat your house with it either, higher natural gas prices. Big Oil and Big Gas exports fuel and natural gas to other countries that will pay more for it, much more than here. There will be NO price reduction or cheaper prices for fuel or natural gas IN the US, so it does NOT matter how much crude oil or natural gas is produced. More refineries is Not the answer, keep the exported fuel and natural gas here. If you are traveling, know where your natural gas refill stations are and plan according. There are many online sites that have CNG refill stations located across the US for people that have to refill their CNG vehicles. Plan your trip with those stations on the route. With more natural gas trucks, truck stops will have or install CNG refueling pumps to take care of them. So cars and pickups can refuel at those same natural gas pumps too. If CNG vehicles are 'bombs,' then why aren't gasoline vehicles bombs also with their 10 to 20 gallons of highly flammable liquid fuel in the fuel tanks. Gasoline vehilces have crashed, caught on fire and exploded too! DUH! Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, vehicle manufactures Produce and the population ‘Drives’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! XII/XXII/MMXII!

A ¾ ton bifuel 4x4 crew cab pickup with a 6.5 foot bed would be of great interest to us. The GM bifuel offering has a 650 mile range which is a big plus as well. Natural gas has much less energy contained in it than gasoline. That's why CNG-powered vehicles have less power than one that runs on gasoline. Meanwhile, EVs also have better acceleration than CNG-powered vehicles. EVs also can be charged up from any old electrical outlet. CNG stations are few and far between. Also, CNG vehicles have much less range than gasoline vehicles. Drive a CNG vehicle with less than 1/4 tank and you risk getting stranded.

No matter how much more we drill it will always be the short sighted approach as sooner or later it will run out. It's cleaner but we are still burning a limited resource. That, or once it's so hard and expensive to get to it will make electricity cheaper. I own a 454 chevy powered Madza RX7 so I'm in no hurry to give up gas it's just for most of us a daily electric commuter wouldn't really have any limitations. I want to tell OPEC to shove it, I just want to do it with something really clean and renewable that we own.
