Gas prices soar, drivers feel pinch
Sunday, May 11, 2008
Post Crescent -- Listen carefully next time you gas up your car. That rushing sound you hear is the sound of your bank account emptying. And with gas prices heading toward $4, that sound is about to get louder. It's not sparing people who don't go near gas pumps. Anything shipped, from furniture to food, is a little more costly today as businesses try to recoup their costs. And gas prices still are rising. This week, The Post-Crescent is examining how gasoline prices are affecting the Fox Valley in a five-day series beginning Monday. The series will look at what caused prices to rocket so high, show how people in the Fox Valley are coping and examine whether there's anything

You take one of the most efficient planes not an average plane.

The one that my buddy flies uses almost the same amount of fuel as a 747 but only hauls 46 passengers. According to him the consumption is 2750 gals per hour. 2750 / 46 = ~60 GPH/P 8 Hr range = 480 gals per person

I drive ~ 4890 miles per year I use ~ 250 gals per Year.

The Base for my statement

"Some of you complain about SUV's using fuel.
I can drive my JEEP a whole year and use less Crude Oil than what it takes for one person's share on a single trip on a commercial airplane.
-----------------------------------
Save Crude Oil Don't fly commercial airplanes."

Let us take a closer look at that statement.

How much fuel does an international plane use for a trip?

A plane like a Boeing 747 uses approximately 1 gallon of fuel (about 4 liters) every second. Over the course of a 10-hour flight, it might burn 36,000 gallons (150,000 liters). According to Boeing's Web site, the 747 burns approximately 5 gallons of fuel per mile (12 liters per kilometer).

This sounds like a tremendously poor miles-per-gallon rating! But consider that a 747 can carry as many as 568 people. Let's call it 500 people to take into account the fact that not all seats on most flights are occupied. A 747 is transporting 500 people 1 mile using 5 gallons of fuel. That means the plane is burning 0.01 gallons per person per mile. In other words, the plane is getting 100 miles per gallon per person! The typical car gets about 25 miles per gallon, so the 747 is much better than a car carrying one person, and compares favorably even if there are four people in the car. Not bad when you consider that the 747 is flying at 550 miles per hour (900 km/h)!

Now I drive 55-60 and of coarse I get about 4MPG better than when I useto drive 70-75 MPH.
Last evening on interstate 90 I passed 3 semi trucks and one blazer.
Everything blasted be me and some even gave me the one finger ?Salute.
-----------------------------------
Most of us like SPEED - drive like crazy people.
You will use about 25% less fuel if you drive 55 instead of 70

If you take a bus instead of planes 75% fuel savings
If you take a Train instead of planes 95% fuel savings
If goods are transported by Train instead of truck or plane this country could have a vast surplus of fuel !!
-----------------------------------
Save Crude Oil Don't fly commercial airplanes.
-----------------------------------
No Less or No Extra driving
I have nothing else to cut out.
I have already cut all ?Nonessential travel.

Paying for a diesel truck to deliver water to one's office is a silly use of resources.

If only they could, say, pipe it in and have it on tap...

The infrastructure of public transportation isn't that fantastic but there is actually a public water supply.

If it tastes lousy, stick a filter on there and change it out monthly. A years' delivery of filters can be done in one stop.

SummitSkiBum, that is absolutely the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Gee, lets blow up gas stations and tankers so that they have to raise their prices to repair the damage that was caused. What about the little mom and pop operations? Do we blow up their stations too?
