Gasoline air hybrid technology promises 100+ mpg

Smart Planet -- French automaker Peugeot Citroen is claiming a major breakthrough in fuel efficiency due to a new vehicle design that replaces car battery with compressed air. The air tanks refill automatically and power a special hydraulic motor that, like an electric hybrid, works in unison with a regular internal combustion engine.

Peugeot says that it can achieve a fuel economy of up to 117 mpg using this technology. Car enthusiast Web site Motor Authority notes that the compressed air technology only adds 220 pounds to the weight of a car, which is well below the added heft of an electric hybrid. The maximum city speed is around 45 mph; the gasoline engine will kick in for highway speeds. Compressed air hybrids could hit the road by 2016.

It coud conceivably be a road near you - no matter where

Gasoline air hybrid technology promises 100+ mpg? A liquid fuel, high mpg vehicle will out perform any other method of propulsion for a vehicle. This air Inbred is headed in the wrong direction and going nowhere. Don't believe the French, they will try to sell you anything.
There maybe just a bunch of inflated party ballons inside to power the vehicle air engine. Wasn't there a hydraulic vehicle promising the same high mpg thing?
I will drive my vehicle into the ground before buying anything new, used, EV, Inbred, Plug In, diesel, hydrogen, alternative fuel, CNG, concept and certainly NOT a Fiat, Prius, Tesla, Leaf, Volt or an NYC/Hurricane Sandy Special 'exploding submarine' Fiskar Karma Inbred!
And NO French compressed air driven Peugeot either!
Vehicle manufactures Produce and the population ‘Drives’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good
‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

Nice little coal burner.

It is an indirect EV. Uses electricity to run a compressor. Coal makes electricity.

Onboard fuel is very light. As light as air. Neat technology. Keep trying!

Would be interesting to see how this develops. Some say it is old technology but it it works and saves a battery use then why not.

"The maximum city speed is around 45 mph"

This thing doesn't sound like its ready for "Prime-Time." If they claim 45MPH is tops in the city it will probably turn out to be lower in actual use.

I will believe this when it is available to the public for purchase. Gas Buddy always has stories about phenomenal gas mileage breakthroughs that never seem to be realized.

This is interesting. I read about the IC engine/compressed air hybrid concept some 25-30 years ago, and wondered why it had never come to fruition. The technology is old, whereas the new battery technology in hybrid electric vehicles raises concerns about battery life and the effect on the environment during manufacture and/or recycling.
I look forward to seeing whether this concept can deliver.

After working on vehicles made by Peugeot for too many years, I find it hard to believe that they can make anything that will stay together or do what they say they can do. If you have any thoughts of buying their crap, you better check into it very thoroughly before you throw away your hard earned money. They have built junk for so long, it is hard to envision them changing their ways!
