> It is a dangerous combination of driving must too fast for the conditions at hand, tail-gating in rush hour bumper to bumper traffic, plus inattention while using the cell phone, reading the newspaper, drinking coffee, eating, doing makeup for work, and the list goes on!<
As I posted initially, the signs do no good and as NHLiveFree's statement quoted above demonstrates, contrary to initially saying I was "completely wrong", I was spot on saying that the sign focuses on the wrong problem. Speed alone is not the problem. Speed, in combo with all those other things, is a problem. But telling people simply to slow down but ignoring all the other things they are doing wrong, won't solve anything. And though I've never driven I-93, I doubt my experience on roads like it differs from what happens there: Drivers will park themselves in the left lane at or below the speed limit causing congestion. Even if they are traveling over the limit, unless they are passing someone, they need to get over and let faster traffic move on. Blocking traffic flow is a much worse sin than moving above an arbitrary speed limit.
Workzones present a different set of issues. While some contend that speed is the problem, and it certainly contributes, all of those other factors that NHL listed are even more troublesome in speed zones and poorly thought out construction sites invite disaster. More attention needs to be paid to the actual site and the worksite needs to be laid out to protect the workers. Organize the work to minimize danger. Don't count on signs to do the job. Patrol the area if speed is really the issue and the zone can't be designed around it. Install temporary traffic lights at one spot in the zone to allow construction traffic to exit the zone onto the freeway. Fire, or at least fine construction workers who fail to follow security rules. If these things are not done, lowering the speed limit to 45 mph will not avoid accidents and a dumb sign telling folks to "slow down" will accomplish nothing.

Hope it helps, but it may just be one more distraction/ another sign to try to read while driving.

This area is right over the Mass border. Perhaps at this time of year there are many skiiers from southern areas driving to the slopes. . . and I wish many who are not good skiers would slow down too.

Completely wrong SUVFan. In the case of I-93, the NH DOT knows the problem and explained in another new article just days ago that the average speed on this highway is 82.5 mph. The posted speed limit is 65 mph, while in construction areas, like the one noted here, it is 55 mph. It is a dangerous combination of driving must too fast for the conditions at hand, tail-gating in rush hour bumper to bumper traffic, plus inattention while using the cell phone, reading the newspaper, drinking coffee, eating, doing makeup for work, and the list goes on!
I-93 is the busiest highway in NH and also the most congested. It is south of its largest city of Manchester. The state police coverage of this Interstate has been sparse ever since it opened in the early 1960s as the nearest state police barracks is over 20 miles away in Epping, NH. It has finally dawned on state traffic officials that they require intensive police coverage on the congested soutern end of I-93.

Right there with 85XJ, though it's tough to text and read signs at the same time.
These signs work about as well as the no gun signs work on buildings. And like the no gun signs, they focus on the wrong problem.
Speed by itself is rarely the issue. In fact, the slow drivers in the left lanes are probably the number one issue. All the left lane parade makers do is cause folks to switch lanes as they go around the parade maker, often trying to squeeze into small spaces.
MOVE OVER!
Ticket the left lane parade makers -- heck, I think I might actually support a traffic cam that was used exclusively for that!

I guess not all the illegal citizens (undocumented workers) can read fluently or sufficiently enough to discern whether or not to obey the speed limit or to slam on the brakes and have someone plow into you.
