In Mexico, Auto Plants Hit the Gas

Wall Street Journal -- PUEBLA, Mexico—Mexico is taking center-stage in the production of cars, where lower costs and skilled workers are reordering the global auto market.

Six years ago, Mexico was the world's ninth largest exporter of cars. Today the country is ranked fourth—behind Germany, Japan and South Korea—with exports expected to total more than 2.14 million vehicles this year.

One in 10 cars sold last year in the U.S. was made in Mexico. Next year, every new taxi in New York's fleet—made by Nissan Motor Co. 7201.TO +1.87% —will carry the "Hecho en Mexico" label. Mexico is now exporting vehicles to China, and even helped Japan keep up with orders after last year's tsunami.

Most parts suppliers are shipping from the US and Canada for assembly in Mexico. Good paying jobs in Mexico mean two things, the illegal immigrants coming to the US are no longer largely from Mexico and Mexican citizens spend on other American goods like they never have before. You can spot Mexican tourists shopping here because they turn over the items and check to see where they are made. Made in USA Canada has a cache for quality that is prized in Mexico. We both come out ahead in the long run. They are also stealing back to North America jobs that had gone to China 10 years ago.

This is true of those that stay in Mexico and those that come to the US. They are "hungry" for success and are willing to work hard for it. Twinkies is going out of business. If twinkies has two products to deliver, two different truck drivers are needed.
