Industry works to avoid listing of Lesser Prairie Chicken

The Denver Channel -- LUBBOCK, Texas - Oil, gas and wind energy producers are working to persuade federal wildlife officials not to enact protections for the lesser prairie chicken, a move that could force them to halt or significantly alter their operations to protect the species' dwindling grassland habitat.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will hold its final public hearings this week on its proposal to list the prairie grouse as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

The chickens, which have feathered feet and a stout build, need large tracts of relatively intact native grasslands and prairies to thrive. But such habitats are being wiped out as wind turbines, oil derricks, ranches and farms are added.

Prairie Chickens won't go near farm land so there is no real clash. Only reason there is a "problem" is who get s the royalty payment as a land owner. The big ranchers or the farmers. Just like the Lincoln County land wars with Billy the Kid and Pat Garret. Can't believe how dumb (or biased)the people who write and post these stories on line are. You drill for oil where the oil is, you build wind turbines where the wind is steady and common. Why don't YOU finance some turbines down in a valley where the wind is weak and rare or drill for oil where research says it is not located. There may be some vacancies at the EPA or DOE, you'd fit right in.
