Keystone’s Tar Sands Waste Said to Warm Climate More Than Coal

Bloomberg -- Refining Canada’s oil sands into gasoline may speed global warming more than previously estimated after accounting for use of a waste product, which can be burned like coal.

Opening a new front in a fight to persuade President Barack Obama to reject the Keystone XL pipeline, which would carry oil sands from Alberta to the U.S. Gulf Coast, environmental groups yesterday released a study that found refining the heavy material will create 5 billion tons of petroleum coke, or petcoke, that’s used by power plants, aluminum factories and steel mills

Compared with coal, petcoke is cheaper and releases more carbon dioxide when burned. Much of the U.S. supply is exported.

First when an equal amout of energy from natural gas must be burned to heat up and melt the tar sands bitumen and then again after the caustic tar sands crude is refined to be utilized as gasoline, diesel, etc. Not a clean or pretty process at all.

I don't see how that's going to affect global warming (if you believe in such a thing).

These fools don't realize that if the oil does not come to the USA for refining, it will go to China. So the Tar Sands will get processed into oil, regardless of whether they stop the Keystone pipe line or not. The only difference is that the Pipeline will lower gas costs in the USA, and provide JOBS! JOBS! High paying JOBS! Some people with masters degrees don't care if other Americans have good jobs.

When Chavez fired the skilled oil workers and engineers in the Venezuelan oil fields, Venezuela could not use latest, safest methods, therefore Venezuelan tar sands are much "dirtier" than Canada. But Socialist Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) wants to stop Canada.
