Magnetic Metamaterials Could Lead To Wireless Power Transmission

CleanTechnica -- The concept of transmitting electricity wirelessly to electric vehicles has dream-like advantages, and researchers from Spain say they have an idea that will make this a useful reality.

Probably the most idealistic dream related to such technology is that it would allow electric vehicles without energy storage systems. Electric vehicles without energy storage systems, such as trains, can be extremely fast, extremely efficient, and the cheapest overall, provided that the electricity transmission system is economical and efficient.

Electric vehicles without batteries would have an unparalleled power to weight ratio (their motors easily weigh less than 100 pounds). And their light weight would provide major handling and safety benefits.

Weight is that important!" ...I agree that if a way is found around the fact that earth's magnetic fields are not static and this ends up being possible for single vehicles that would be awesome, however, for trains which have many cars weighing many tons, it may not be quite so feasible as the train would not have enough weight in the engine car to help keep it on the track if it had to stop in the event of an emergency and given that solar flares disrupt and change earth's magnetic fields on a regular basis, said vehicles may need a back-up source of energy in order to maintain momentum following disruption/interference of power from a solar flare. ...Very interesting post BennoBlue, thank you for giving us more fun food for thought! :)

Its in every transformer by every house. Its in almost all motors." Almost? Please, describe a single example of an ELECTRIC motor that DOESN'T use magnetic induction. It doesn't matter if they use brushes, are brushless, are stepping motors, are AC or DC, they ALL use magnetic induction. It's a FUNDAMENTAL principle of electric motor operation.
