Mazda Bets Big on Diesel With Redesigned 2014 Mazda 6

Forbes -- While most other automakers are pursuing hybrids and electric vehicles as the way to a more fuel-efficient future, Mazda is focusing on diesel technology. It’s a critical decision as the Japanese automaker works to transform itself from an underdog into a market leader.

Mazda announced at the Los Angeles Auto Show that the U.S. version of its midsize 6 sedan, which got a major redesign for the 2014 model year, will offer a new diesel four-cylinder engine, in addition to a conventional four-cylinder gasoline engine.

Though Mazda was upstaged in L.A. by all the hype around Honda’s new Accord Plug-In Hybrid and electric cars from BMW, Chevrolet and Fiat, offering a diesel engine in the 2014 Mazda 6 marks a significant milestone for the company.

Actually, yes, it is.

Personally, I don't see the advantage of a diesel. Sure, it'll get better MPG, but diesel is so much more expensive. Yesterday, I noticed that gas was $3.29 per gallon while diesel at the same station was $4.29. A dollar more??? Is diesel 30% more efficient???

I would prefer a car with a gasoline tank AND a CNG tank. CNG for the $pM driven and gasoline for those long hauls where CNG may not be readily available.

With diesel selling for a few cents more than premium gas, it will be interesting to see how they market this car.

If the diesel runs clean with no after treatment, the engine should be a winner. Maybe some other manufacturer will licence the technology.

I would think CNG is a better move than diesel, the diesel price is a definite downside for the product. Maybe the Mazda will get some extraordinary MPG's, time will tell...
