The Hybrid Car That Runs on Air

yahoo -- French automaker Peugeot Citreon has invented a brand new air-powered hybrid. The 'Hybrid Air' system uses compressed air to move the car's wheels when driving under 43 mph. Peugeot says the new hybrid system should get up to 141 miles per gallon of gas. Models should roll out as early as 2016. Man, we hope it's not all a bunch of hot compressed air!

So, I assume that the engine drives a compressor that pressurizes the air tank. I wonder how much the tank costs compared to a hybrid battery pack. Also, would a system like this still need to idle in order to drive all of the vehicles accessories like the electrical system, power steering, air conditioning, etc.?

It was one of the technologies tried after Congress banned horse drawn streetcars due to the accumulation of horse manure on the streets. Along with compressed air they built a cable car system and a storage battery system. They all failed and until 1962, when streetcar service ended, they ran on an underground power system downtown and overhead in the rest of town.
