Tampa Bay Times -- Quick: You're a state that has twice the pedestrian deaths than the national average.

What do you do?

If you're the Florida Department of Transportation, you spend $174,500 in federal highway taxpayer money to sponsor two NASCAR stock cars at Sunday's Daytona 500, then hope the publicity will make everyone aware of the dangers of cars hitting humans. And maybe save a few lives.

At least that's the plan, according to Trenda McPherson, the pedestrian and bicycle safety program manager for the state transportation agency. The agency, which is known more for building highways than sidewalks, picked this week because accidents spike during the international event.

Your tax dollars at work: on the side of a NASCAR race car? Taxpayer money better spent on TV time advertising the hazards of pedestrian deaths. TV advertising will reach many more people than on the side of two race cars that not very many people will see in person or on TV.....
Drive vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

I hope it is well spent, but not what fuel taxes are suppose to be spent on, which is roads and bridges.

NASCAR uses a LOT of gas, the high-priced blend too, but I don’t think they pay road taxes on it.

i m not a resident of florida, but it seems like a waste of money. is this a one day event? would it make sense to close down the road during the event?

No one will pay any attention to that publicity. Everyone watching the event will be too busy getting drunk and watching cars drive in circles at high speeds.
